P.I. Talks: The L’aviye Mastermind
It’s heeeeeeeeeere! The FIRST installment of P.I. Talks *dances*. P.I. Talks will be entries of me interviewing amazing people who are working hard at pursuing their dreams. Today’s interview is with my good friend Abiye-Yvonne Dede, the mastermind behind L’aviye (http://www.laviye.com).
N: Abiye, tell me a bit about yourself.
A: My name is Abiye and I’m a student at Nottingham Trent University. I’m in the final year of my PhD in cancer biomarker discovery where I’m trying to find markers to diagnose prostate cancer. I LOVE fashion. I have always been amazed by the way accessories can transform a basic outfit and I’ve always loved to customise and create things. As a result, I started making jewellery and accessories for sale – my jewellery line is called L’aviye.
N: Tell us about L’aviye.
A: L’AVIYE™ is an online retailer of premium handmade African-inspired jewellery & accessories. Each piece is handcrafted to perfection, ensuring that it reflects an unrivalled combination of trend and style. Our designs are handmade in the UK using carefully selected African print fabrics and finished with meticulous attention to detail. L’aviye creates bespoke jewellery & accessories that embraces vibrant colour and rich vivid tones. Until November 2013, we were previously known as ‘Accessories by Abiye’. We’ve just launched our new Summer/Fall ’14 collection – an exclusive range of unique jewellery – rich in colour and exquisite in design to add a vibrant and distinctive finish to any ensemble.
N: What is the name of the new collection? What does this new collection entail? What inspired the pieces in this new collection?
A: L’AVIYE’s new Summer/Fall ’14 collection is called ‘Pastel Elegance’. It consists of handmade jewellery and accessory pieces inspired by pastel colour tones. The aim with this collection was to fuse African print fabrics centred around feminine pastel hues with unique Western-inspired jewellery and accessories, to create the African-meets-Western look. Pastel colours are very on trend in 2014, featuring all over the high street and on runways, but are not very common with African prints; and I wanted to create a collection of items that although were inspired by Africa, also paid homage to the soft, soothing and near neutral tones of pastels. L’AVIYE’s jewellery collection features cute corals, baby blues, delicate oranges, pretty pinks, soft greens and airy lilacs.
N: Where did inspiration of L’aviye come from? What inspired you to come up with your beautiful pieces?
A: You could say my inspiration has come from my African and Western background, culture and experiences. I was born in Nigeria, West Africa – a country with vast cultures and tradition and part of the culture includes the way we dress. Though born in Nigeria, I grew up in the UK as well and have lived here for about 10 years, so I’m very much influenced by African and Western cultures. My vision with L’aviye is to make African inspired jewelry and accessories that can be worn with everyday Western outfits to create the African-meets-Western look.
N: What was your dream when you were a child? Has it changed?
A: I am living my dream at the moment. On two separate occasions as a young child, I remember telling my parents that I wanted to be doctor and fashion designer. Of course as a child I said other things, such as interior designer and wedding planner (haha… overambitious, even as a child lol), but these two resonated. My family encouraged me to pursue my dreams with science as fashion was a no-no at the time. So I did my degree in biomedical sciences and when I finished, I was picked out to do PhD straight away. I decided not to miss that opportunity, and whilst I was doing that, L’aviye was birthed, so I am literally living my dream! I couldn’t be happier.
N: What advice would you give to someone who is struggling with motivation in pursuing their dreams?
A: One thing that I have learnt during school, university and life in general is that the key to success is persistence. I think it’s also important to believe in yourself – surround yourself with people who encourage, inspire and motivate you! Business is tough, but you have to learn to be tougher if you want to make it.
